HISTORY OF BITUMEN

It is believed that the word BITUMEN is derived from Sanskrit Language and from the word jate meaning pitch. Its Latin equivalent was pixtu-men which is termed as BITUMEN in French. BITUMEN has been used as the moisture insulator and as a joint factor in different fields for more than 5000 years. Its oldest recorded application traces back to 3800 B.C. which is related to the Sumerians.

The word BITUMEN has been used several times in the holly books. For example, insulation of Noah’s Ark, or the event of Mosses being put in the water in a cradle insulated by BITUMEN, also the construction of the Babylon Tower are the cases mentioned in the holly books.
Other cases of the application of Bitumen are preserving materials, dead bodies’ mummification, fixing bricks, keeping water, etc.
Man has been informed about ASPHALT materials for a long time and it has been used in different parts of the world in different fields. Using PURE BITUMEN in modern industries started after PETROLEUM was discovered and reached its peak in the 2nd half of the 20th century.
